Body systems at a glance

Cardiovascular
Heart pumps blood; arteries carry blood away from the heart, veins return it; capillaries exchange gases and nutrients
Blood flow
Body → vena cavae → right atrium → tricuspid → right ventricle → pulmonary valve → lungs → pulmonary veins → left atrium → mitral → left ventricle → aortic valve → aorta
Respiratory
Nose → pharynx → larynx → trachea → bronchi → bronchioles → alveoli (gas exchange by diffusion); diaphragm drives inhalation
Nervous
CNS = brain + spinal cord; PNS = everything else. Sympathetic = fight or flight (↑HR, ↑BP); parasympathetic = rest and digest
Digestive
Mouth (amylase) → esophagus → stomach (pepsin, HCl) → small intestine (most absorption) → large intestine (water). Liver makes bile, gallbladder stores it, pancreas makes enzymes + insulin
Endocrine
Pituitary = master gland; thyroid = metabolism; adrenals = cortisol, epinephrine; pancreas = insulin (↓glucose) & glucagon (↑glucose). Most hormones use negative feedback
Urinary
Kidney → ureter → bladder → urethra. Nephron filters, reabsorbs, secretes. ADH and aldosterone help the body hold on to water
Immune
Innate = skin, inflammation, phagocytes. Adaptive = B cells (antibodies) and T cells. Vaccines create active immunity
Skeletal & muscular
206 bones; red marrow makes blood cells. Tendons: muscle→bone; ligaments: bone→bone. Muscle types: skeletal (voluntary), smooth, cardiac
Integumentary
Epidermis → dermis → hypodermis. Protects, regulates temperature, makes vitamin D

Anatomy directions

Superior / inferior
Toward the head / toward the feet
Anterior / posterior
Front (ventral) / back (dorsal)
Medial / lateral
Toward the midline / away from the midline
Proximal / distal
Closer to / farther from where a limb attaches
Planes
Sagittal = left/right · Frontal (coronal) = front/back · Transverse = top/bottom

Biology

Organelles
Nucleus = DNA · Mitochondria = ATP · Ribosome = proteins · Golgi = packaging · Lysosome = digestion · Rough ER = protein, smooth ER = lipids
Mitosis vs. meiosis
Mitosis → 2 identical diploid cells (growth/repair). Meiosis → 4 unique haploid gametes
DNA → protein
Transcription (DNA → mRNA, nucleus) → translation (mRNA → protein, ribosome). DNA: A–T, C–G. RNA: A–U
Macromolecules
Carbs → monosaccharides · Lipids → fatty acids + glycerol · Proteins → amino acids · Nucleic acids → nucleotides
Genetics
Aa × Aa → 1 AA : 2 Aa : 1 aa (3:1 dominant phenotype). Homozygous = same alleles, heterozygous = different

Chemistry

Atom
Protons (+) and neutrons (0) in nucleus; electrons (−) in shells. Atomic number = protons. Mass number = protons + neutrons
Isotopes & ions
Isotope = different neutrons. Ion = different electrons (lose e⁻ → positive, gain e⁻ → negative)
Bonds
Ionic = transfer of electrons · Covalent = sharing · Hydrogen bonds = weak attractions (water)
pH
0–6.9 acidic · 7 neutral · 7.1–14 basic. Blood ≈ 7.35–7.45
Reaction rate ↑
Higher temperature, higher concentration, more surface area, catalyst (lowers activation energy)
Solutions
Hypertonic = cell shrinks · Hypotonic = cell swells · Isotonic = no net change

Scientific reasoning

Variables
Independent = what you change · Dependent = what you measure · Controlled = kept the same
Control group
Group that does not receive the treatment, used for comparison
Correlation ≠ causation
Two things moving together does not prove one causes the other
Metric prefixes
kilo 1000 · hecto 100 · deka 10 · base · deci 0.1 · centi 0.01 · milli 0.001 · micro 0.000001

Must-know formulas

Percent
part = percent × whole · % change = (new − old) ÷ old × 100
Proportion
a/b = c/d → a × d = b × c
Area
Rectangle l × w · Triangle ½bh · Circle πr²
Perimeter / circumference
Rectangle 2l + 2w · Circle 2πr
Volume
Rectangular prism l × w × h · Cylinder πr²h
Pythagorean theorem
a² + b² = c²
Mean / median / mode / range
Average · middle value (sorted) · most frequent · max − min
Conversions
1 in = 2.54 cm · 1 kg = 2.2 lb · 1 L = 1000 mL · 1 tsp = 5 mL · 1 oz = 30 mL · °F = 1.8°C + 32

Question types and how to answer them

Main idea / summary
Pick the answer that covers the whole passage — not one detail
Inference
Must be supported by the text; avoid extreme words (always, never)
Author’s purpose
Persuade, inform, entertain, or explain (PIE + expository)
Point of view
1st person = I/we · 2nd = you · 3rd = he/she/they. Look at word choice for tone
Fact vs. opinion
Facts can be checked; opinions use judgment words (best, should, beautiful)
Words in context
Plug each choice back into the sentence
Directions / sequence
Track every step in order; watch for “if”, “unless”, “before”
Charts & graphs
Read the title, axes, units and legend before the numbers

Punctuation

Comma
Before a coordinating conjunction joining two sentences (FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so), after introductory phrases, in lists
Semicolon
Joins two complete sentences without a conjunction
Colon
After a complete sentence to introduce a list or explanation
Apostrophe
Possession (the nurse’s chart, the nurses’ station) and contractions. its = possessive, it’s = it is

Grammar & sentence structure

Subject–verb agreement
Singular subject → singular verb, even with phrases in between (“The box of gloves is…”)
Pronouns
Match the antecedent in number; who = subject, whom = object
Modifiers
Place them next to what they describe to avoid dangling modifiers
Sentence types
Simple (1 independent clause) · Compound (2 independent) · Complex (1 independent + 1 dependent) · Compound-complex
Errors
Fragment = missing subject or verb · Run-on / comma splice = two sentences joined incorrectly
